One of the Perks of Living in NYC

NYC may be one of the most cutting edge and exciting cities in the world- but there are drawbacks to living in the big apple. Living on a 5th floor walk-up, not having a dishwasher, garage, or washing machine, street noise, etc... However, one of the perks of living here is that everyone eventually comes to NYC for a visit- and when this happens, I get to catch up with old friends and family without having to leave my home.

In April, I was able to spend several days with one of my dearest friends from college- Eldon Kartchner. Eldon has had a rough couple years (to say the least). His beautiful wife Heather died of cancer leaving him a single father with three children. In an attempt to offer him some respite, me, Carlos, Wade, and Paul provided a few days of laughs, tears, and exposure to NYC.

His first night in town, we went to see the hit Broadway Musical "The Book of Mormon." I thought it was even better the second time! We went backstage after the show to meet up with another college friend Clark Johnson.

In addition to seeing Book of Mormon, we also saw Billy Elliot, enjoyed many good meals, countless heartfelt conversations, and one old fashioned piano party (naturally).

The weekend after Eldon was in town, my sister Kymberly came to NYC for one day. She had been working with her husband in New Jersey, and was able to sneak away for 24 hours. We packed A LOT into one day.
The night she arrived, we met up with my friend Wade for dinner, and then went and saw the new Bway musical "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert."

The next morning we got a VERY early start and went to a taping of "Live with Kelly and Regis."

After the taping we went downtown and did the usual tourist stuff. Staten Island Ferry, Wall Street, Group Zero, shopping on Canal Street, etc... It was a great day with my sister!

A few days after my sister left, I was able to meet up with my cousin Jenny, who was in town with her husband. It is always great to see family and friends in the city and show them some of my favorite places.

WADE IS BACK!!!

Wade, (AKA Microwave, Wayne, Darth Waders), one of my all time besties (going on around 14 years now) is in and out of NYC due to his work- performing on cruise ships (not a bad gig- traveling the world while getting paid to do what he loves). While I support his talent and work ethic, the greater part of me celebrates when a contract finished and he returns to his NY family (until the next gig calls him back to the open seas and adoring fans).
After a 9 month absence, Wade returned to us last month. We celebrated with a dinner party at Carlos's house.

A few weeks later, we again celebrated Wade with a birthday dinner at Film Center Cafe.

Wade, I love you so much! Thanks for your amazing friendship, humor, loyalty, compliments, talent, fashion sense, and all around extraordinariness (that's a word).

TAP Project

My friend Heather is such a do-gooder! She is a social worker by profession, but also spends countless hours of her personal time volunteering for local and international causes.
She has most recently been working/volunteering as the regional team leader for the UNICEF TAP project- an initiative to provide clean drinking water to needed corners of the world. A few weeks ago I did my part by attending a gala, socializing with friends, and having some cocktails- hey, we all have to pitch in where we can.

Passing the Torch

On March 23, I started my day at 6am on a bus traveling upstate to Albany where I would spend the day advocating for services (housing, medical, etc...) for people living with HIV/AIDS. While on the way to Albany, I learned that Elizabeth Taylor had died (what would we do without facebook?).
It seemed fitting that on the day of her death, I could honor this artist and activist by carrying on a cause she spent countless hours, dollars, and energy fighting for.
Me and Elizabeth Taylor- we are practically the same person!

Book of Mormon on Broadway

BRITTANI! Surprise Visit with a Long Time Bestie

On a recent flight back to NYC from Salt Lake City, I was bumped from my 3:00pm flight until the midnight red eye. Having a few hours to kill in SLC, I immediately called one of my oldest and dearest friends- my old college roommate, supermodel (seriously- after 4 kids) and uber talented forever girlfriend Brittani Nordberg Brown.
Britt came to get me, and we spent the evening eating sushi, gossiping about our friends (past and present) catching up on kids (hers), NYC life (mine), and work (ours). Even though Britt and I have only seen each other a handful of times in the past decade- every time we do meet up, it is like no time has passed. Above all else, that has to be the #1 defining characteristic of a true friendship.

It was so So SOOO great to see my old friend- as well as her ridiculously perfect husband (TRENT ROCKS) and her gorgeous kids.

Family Time in Idaho

Following my trip to CA, I had a connection flight in SLC. I made a somewhat spontaneous decision to not catch the connection, and instead, head up to Idaho to spend a few days with the fam.
My sister was having a lumpectomy (benign cancer-free tumor, thank goodness) and so I was able to spend a few days entertaining the kids while she recovered. We hit the movies, The Craze Arcade (where Mitch hit the jackpot), Sammys burgers, went to Wyatt's basketball game, and had a sleepover at Grandmas. Come on, I only have a few days a year to win their affection- I have to make every minute count!

In addition to spending time my amazing parents, sister, and kiddies, I was also able to spend some time with my awesome cousin Jared, my dear Grandma, and the always entertaining Aunt Nancy. I love my family!

San Francisco- Back Again

I love San Francisco. As a young kid, we lived outside the city and I have memories of going into San Fran to see The Nutcracker at Christmastime, driving up and over the steep city streets in the family car, and tearing apart round loaves of sourdough bread bought at Fisherman's Wharf.

Going back as an adult is even better. We got to do all those things (well, not see The Nutcracker), PLUS have cocktails, dance all night at an 80's club, and sleep in a hotel (not the backseat of the station wagon).
We only had one day in San Fran, but we made the most of it. Dinner at Harvey's (as in Harvey Milk), dancing all night at Trigger in the Castro, and the double decker tour bus to catch see the city sights.

... AND, the company couldn't be beat!

My Favorite Place on Earth (I think)

I have been very lucky to have been able to travel extensively around this country, as well as the world. I have seen some pretty spectacular places- but if I had to choose, I think my favorite spot would have to be the California Coast/Big Sur. It doesn't get any better than eating and drinking your way up the most stunning coastline with the people you love.
This trip was no exception.
Following our weekend in LA, we hit the road and spent two days driving up the coast (final destination San Francisco). We did almost the identical trip Paul and I made in October- Santa Barbara, Los Olivos, Solvang, Cambria, hiking in Big Sur, Nepenthe, and Carmel.
Not only was the location and experience amazing, but two days in the car with your best friends is always good forced bonding time (especially when Paul pulls out the question books).

Oscar Weekend in Hollywood, CA

There is no greater way my group of friends love celebrating birthdays than a destination vacation. This year for Carlos's bday, we hit the road/sky and headed to LA, followed by a two day drive up the coast to San Francisco. Whenever I am in LA, I always feel like an oversized, underdressed slouch! Those LA kids are no joke with their hair, gym bodies, and fashion! Self-loathing aside, it was a lovely weekend surrounded by friends.

I have never gotten into the show Desperate Housewives- but I will probably give it a go- especially after my recent magical day on Wisteria Lane.
Thanks to our friend Phil, Carlos and I got to spend a day on the set of Desperate Housewives when we were in CA. Phil does the costuming/wardrobe for the show and was the best tour guide/host/comedian anyone could ever ask for.

NYC knows how to do Bowling

Growing up in Rexburg Idaho, the local bowling alley was a non-descript cinderblock building on the outskirts of town. The dirt and gravel parking lot was filled with pick-up trucks and cigarette butts, and the interior of the bowling alley featured dark faux wood paneling, beer stained carpet, and the stale smell of cigarette smoke, body odor, and regret. Man I had some good times there!

Like most things, New York City has it's own way of doing things.

A few weeks ago the gang went out for a night of NYC style bowling- organized by the aging birthday boy Joey.

For a cool $15 a game (another big difference from the $1.50 I remember from my childhood), we spend all night laughing, eating, drinking, and striking out in Times Square.

What says your New Years Party was a HIT?
9 bags of garbage and sweeping confetti off the ceiling days after the party ends!

I have lived in NYC for 11 years and each January 31st, I have one goal: To avoid Times Square and crowded bars at all costs!

This year I decided to throw a sensible NYE party at my house. It was a blast- so many friends, party favors, food, cocktails, noise makers, and everyone having fun. Best part of the night... I didn't have to find a cab at the end of the evening.

Thanks to all my friends and family for making 2010 so great.

Holiday Catch Up

Dear friends,
I realize I have been MIA from the blog world for several months now. It is not because there has been nothing to write about- rather, that it's seldom easy to find the time/motivation to write. I blame the holidays for making time scarce, and then laziness for not getting around to writing. It wasn't until my dear friend Molly threatened to turn me into DCFS for blog neglect that I decided it was time to get back on the cyber wagon.

Since there is no way to capture the past three months fully, let me provide a snapshot of the season since I last wrote.

THANKSGIVING:
Thanksgiving this year was small. Just a few good friends over for dinner. I made a turkey, and snapped at Paul for telling me how to do things. The usual.
Perhaps I should have listened to him, as after 5 hours of cooking, the turkey didn't look right. Turns out, I was cooking it upside down! It could have been worse-after 5 hours of simmering in the marinade and juices, it was delicious!

Of course, the highlight was not the meal (although it was amazing), but the company. Paul, Jeff McLean, Matt Kovich, and Chad Harlow are all people I am very grateful for.

CHRISTMAS WITH FRIENDS:
Every Christmas, my NY family of friends has our own Christmas celebration together before we travel to spend Christmas with our families. As usual, it is always a night of debauchery, gift giving, laughter, and reliving favorite memories of the year. I am so lucky to have these friends who have been with me for all of my adult life.

CHRISTMAS WITH FAMILY IN IDAHO:
By the time Christmas comes, I am always so eager to get on a plane, head to Idaho, and do nothing for a week. It is such a treat to sleep in, lay around, eat mom's cooking, play with my niece and nephews, see extended family, and just enjoy being lazy and taken care of for a few days.
My nephew Mitchell turned 5 on December 24th- it is always so fun to be able to attend his birthday parties- this year he dressed as Santa. SO CUTE!

It's official- Christmas is coming!
This last week I welcomed in the holiday season by seeing two fabulous Christmas shows.
There is nothing to get you in the holiday spirit like the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Thanks to Kevin for the tickets- it was great to see him on stage kicking up his heels!

I also saw the new Broadway show "Elf." So charming. So funny. So great to have such talented friends!!!

Halloween Weekend!

I have never been big on Halloween. Ever since I have been too old for trick-or-treating, there does not seem to be that much to celebrate about October 31st.
However, this year I had something to celebrate. My old college friend Lee came to town to visit. Yahoo!!!
We had a blast seeing mutual friends, celebrating Jen Dahl's bday, dressing up and hitting a haunted house, Halloween parties in the village, brunching with friends Josh and Jeff, and generally just enjoying NYC in the fall.

Day Trip to Princeton

New York winters are worse than Idaho winters. New York summers are miserable, smelly, crowded, and gross. New York springs last for about 5 minutes. However, New York fall... ohhh.... beautiful glorious fall. How I love you.
Last weekend Seth and I decided to take a road trip out to Princeton, New Jersey to brunch, wander, and enjoy the fall colors, ivy draped buildings, and cute collegiate coeds.
This campus is GORGEOUS! Ivy covered stone buildings, multi-colored fall foliage, anxious students in sweatpants and backpacks... it was the epitome of university life.

After our day of traditional Americana, we hit the other end of the spectrum and went to the Cirque du Soleil show Draglion. It was the perfect day (and the perfect company) enjoying both long established convention, and the modern ridiculous.

Where Did Everybody Go?

It is going to be a strange holiday season. Several of my usual gang will be gone.
Carlos is heading to Florida for two months doing a show. Joey is leaving on tour doing the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Paul is still in Cali/Hawaii for three more weeks. Joe is in Guatemala. Wade is cruising in Hawaii until February. Adam is doing a holiday show until January out of state.
Before Joey and Carlos left, we had a final night with the remaining few. As always, we gathered at Nobu. Sad goodbyes are always made better when taken with high end sushi and pina martinis.

After a fun filled week in Cali with Paul, I flew to SLC where I was able to spend time with my grandma, cousin Jared, other family members, and ultimately made my way to my hometown of Rexburg, ID to see the fam. I love being home. I am sure my family thinks I am the laziest person alive as whenever I go home I am asleep by 10pm, sleep in, lounge around in jammies, and make no effort to do anything productive. My daily routine is: play with my niece and nephews (the greatest kids ever), eat, sleep, repeat.
There is no place like home.

The culmination of day 4 of our West coast road trip was arriving in San Francisco (during rush hour- kill me- I am SO glad I was only navigating and not driving). Not only did we get to spend a night in one of my favorite cities, but our good NYC friend Josh happened to be in town for a few weeks working on a new show. We picked up Josh and drove across the Golden Gate to the San Fran headlands, and then to Tiburon and Sausalito for dinner.
Great city, fabulous company, lifetime memories.

The West Coast Road Trip Continues: Day 4

Day 4: Cambria
There is nothing like waking up, walking outside your door, and stepping onto the beach and smelling the ocean air. Oh Cambria, why are you so spectacular? This is the first thing I want to see every morning.

After leaving Cambria (reluctantly), we began our drive through Big Sur and some of the most spectacularly gorgeous sights this country has to offer. Windy roads through Pine tree covered mountains on one side, and cliffs overlooking ocean waves crashing on the other. Stunning. Of course, it is made even better when the weather is perfect and tunes are blaring out of the convertible car speakers.
Along the way, we stopped in a couple spots for impromptu hikes. Always a surprise. Each stop better than the last.

Nepenthe:
As we made our way (eating and drinking our way up the coast), I was excited to visit Nepenthe- voted one of the most scenic dining locations in the country (and I had been hearing about it for years from Paul). I was not disappointed. There are no words- only these. If you are ever driving through Big Sur, make it a priority to stop here. Breathtaking! And the food wasn't bad either!

Carmel:
After Nepenthe, we headed up to Carmel to spend some time on the beach and walking around town. Sorry you weren't with us mom- I know you would have LOVED this day!

BiCoastal Besties

This has been a season of traveling! I figured out I have been on a plane at least once every month so far this year. Now, I realize that may not be a lot for some, but given that all the trips have been for pleasure and I have been working full time (and a full time student up until August), that's not too bad.
A few weeks ago Paul and I took a long talked about vacation/road trip. We spent several days in LA seeing old friends, and then spent two days driving up the gorgeous highway 1 coastline to our final destination of Sacramento.

Day 1:
I flew into LA where I was greeted by old college friend/former NYC roommate Lee Champion. We played, ate lunch (next to Dylan McDermott), and did some brief LA sightseeing. That night we met up with Paul in the OC where he was hosting/performing in a star studded benefit concert.
That night we met up with another friend Damon Dodge for a good old fashioned night out. Dive bars, Cher impersonators, and street tacos- I love the West Coast!

Day 2:
Our first full day started out with meeting another old college friend/former NYC friend for a pre-brunch coffee date. It was so lovely to see Wyatt! One of the most lovely and genuine men you can imagine.
Next stop was brunch at Joans on 3rd with Paul, Lee, Damon, and NYC friend (now LA transplant) Josh Kirby. Brunch was followed by pink berry at the Beverly Center (naturally) and a day of shopping/resting/playing/happy hour at The Abbey and dinner at Bossa Nova.
At this point, I thought I was in heaven seeing so many old friends.

That night Josh performed at The Comedy Store. He was amazing!!! (I wish I could say the same about all the comics that night). Following the show, it was the entire gang- me, Paul, Wyatt, Lee, Josh, and Damon closing down a nearby wine bar, followed by a sleepover at Josh's with conversation lasting far into the middle of the night.

Day 3:
The next morning Paul and I had a lovely lunch in Weest Hollywood with Josh before hitting the road (in our convertible rental). Sitting outside in 80 degree October weather certainly makes me rethink moving to the West Coast.

We drove up to Los Olivos (hello GORGEOUS DRIVE) for a quick wine tasting, followed by lunch at celebrity chef Bradley Ogden's Root 246 in cute Solvang. Of course, our luck was with us (naturally) and we made friends with the waitress. Bradley happened to be in the restaurant that day, and not only were we invited back for a tour of the kitchen, but were comped some signature dishes. At this point we knew this trip would be one for the books.

That night we drove to Cambria where we had a hotel right on the beach. After checking in, we sat in the hot tub, ate the best pizza ever, and reflected on how lucky we are.

It Gets Better

Over the past several months, there has been an organized movement of "It Gets Better" video clips in response to the rise in publicity of teen suicide due to bullying - often homophobic in nature.
I have watched many of these videos (some are better than others) and must share one particular clip that moved me. There is nothing unusual about this man's story, however, the fact that he shared it in such a public forum shows tremendous courage and selflessness.

Walden-McLean Wedding: Together Forever

Picture this: A floating gazebo in the middle of lake. Champagne is flowing, flowers are blooming, chocolate, cheese, and fruit adorn every guests chair. Live music is provided by some of the best in the business. Friends and family surround you. The entire scene is nestled between two valleys covered in fall foliage colors on a private estate in Vermont. At the center of this scene are two incredibly handsome men- one in a full Scottish kilt ensemble, and the other in a dapper suit and tie. Both wearing killer smiles. The wedding day is finally here!!!

I don't think it is a coincidence that the two best weddings I have ever been to (by far) were both gay weddings- those boys know how to throw a PARTY!!!
I just returned from the wedding of two of my dearest friends- Josh Walden and Jeff McLean. I have known Josh and Jeff separately for about ten years- through totally different circles. Two years ago, both friends were cast in the tour of the Bway musical "Legally Blonde" and the romance developed immediately.
Knowing Josh and Jeff apart, and seeing them together is magical. These fellas are two of the most loving, creative, unique, generous, loyal, and all around extraordinary men I know. I am so So SOOO glad I was able to be a part of this wedding celebration.
A weekend of love, laughter, tears, more laughter... and always, LOVE!

I Need More Vacation Days

I recently accomplished a life long goal of visiting all 50 states. It feels good. There are some gorgeous (and not so gorgeous) corners of this nation. Mountains, plains, forests, beaches, deserts, urban city centers, suburban mini-malls... we really have it all.

Now, time to start scratching off more countries... 27 down, 167 to go!

*** BTW, fly-bys don't count. My criteria was that I had to spend enough time in each state to have at least two meals... in case you were wondering.

I recently returned from the most outrageously beautiful and fabulous vacation- a week in Alaska with my bestie Wade. Now, I have been to some gorgeous places in the past, but few can compare with spectacular Alaska.
Wade is one of my nearest and dearest- being besties since the old BYU days (for anyone keeping track- that was 14 years ago). We met up in Seattle (Wade is performing on the Princess cruise ship) and started the week off with hugs, kisses, laughter, secrets(you better keep your mouth shut Wade!), gossip... and of course... more laughter (that was the one constant of the week).
Highlights include:
Hiking in Juneau

Train ride in Skagway

Breath taking Glacier Bay

Playing mini-golf and Ping pong (I think I found my sport!).

Walking around cute Ketchikan (the Salmon capital of the world)

Evening shopping, awesome Mexican food and free drinks in Victoria, BC

#1 highlight: Seven days of time, love, and memory making with the extraordinary Wade Foster. Late nights laughing our faces off in Wade's cabin watching Will and Grace and old home videos of our last 14 years, catching up with Regina- another friend working on the ship, and watching Wade perform.

Museum of Modern Art

Dear readers,
I have a confession. I live in the most exciting city in the world, and more often than not, following a long day of work- I can be found in my bedroom catching up on hulu.com network television.
I am pleased to announce, that tonight I broke out of my normal routine and hit up the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) with a couple of friends from the office.

I am reminded that I need to take greater advantage of this city. It is a crime to live just a few blocks from some of the worlds greatest art, and never bother to view it.

Of course, some would argue that Veronica Mars reruns are also great art.

Ultimate Survivor: Everglades Kayaking

As a graduation gift, my very adventurous, generous, and amazing friend Seth took me on a 2 day kayaking trip to the Everglades. While the kayaking was the highlight of the trip, we also spent a morning on a swamp speed boat, did a 'land safari' through alligator country (got close enough to touch them at one point), took a nature walk through the overgrown Everglade jungle, drove countless hours in our Electric Blue Mustang convertible (Seth never disappoints when it comes to car rentals), and basically just spent 48 hours laughing, playing, and having a blast with each other.
Thank you Seth for an extraordinary weekend!

After two long years of working full time and being a full time graduate student, the end has finally come. No more bleary eyed nights of reading small print articles. No more Spring Saturdays spent writing papers. No more headaches trying to coordinate schedules for group presentations.
Also, no more days spent hanging out with some of the coolest new friends made over the past two years. No more east side happy hours. No more opportunities to learn from extraordinary professors.
As hard as these past two years have been- it was SOOOO worth it. I will miss being a student.
Now, I just need to find new ways to fill up all this new found free time!

This summer Carlos directed and choreographed "Altar Boyz" at Gateway Theater on Long Island. Not only did Carlos direct, but the show was starring our other bestie Joey in the lead role.
Naturally, the gang all went out for opening night. The town is charming, the theater is quaint, and the boys were incredible! Carlos and Joey- you are too too too talented for words.

Besides Christmas, the 4th of July is my favorite holiday of the year.
This year was another patriotic HIT! Best friends, rooftop BBQs, summer sun, watermelon, gorgeous city views, firework display over the Hudson River... really, it was a celebration of my favorite things.
Thanks to Patrick and Joe for planning and organizing a truly fabulous party. The accompanying soundtrack of Jennifer Hudson and Sister Houston singing God Bless America was the icing on the red white and blue cake!

When that food has been grilled on a BBQ and served with watermelon and potato salad on a perfect summer night, well... that's about the most perfect meal setting I can imagine.
Grilling spaces are hard to come by in NYC- thankfully, Carlos and Joe have a backyard and Joe F has a roof that both sport a BBQ. I am SOOOooo glad I have friends that can provide not only the most amazing company- but glorious spaces to be together.

Dominican Republic Baby!

For Memorial Day weekend, I went with 7 of my nearest and dearest to the Dominican Republic.
There are no words for the house we stayed in. ENORMOUS private villa. Private beach. Expansive green grass lawn. Volleyball and basketball courts. Gym. Gorgeous pool and hottub. Each of us in our own private suite with bathrooms bigger than my bedroom (plus individual outdoor showers). Not to mention the staff of FIVE that cooked all our meals, chauffeured us around town, and waited on us hand and foot.

When we arrived at the house, I though we were at the main resort check in lobby. Nope. Our house was THAT BIG! Oh, did I mention this is the same house that Beyonce and Jay Z stay in when they vacation to the DR. Yup. I showered in Beyonce's shower.

We barely left the house all week. Morning yoga on the beach (led by Carlos), daily swimming in our pool, amazing meals cooked by Jose (our private chef), Daniel the butler bringing platters of appetizers and cocktails to the pool every two hours, music blasting, volleyball nightly at sunset, friendly battles of scrabble and ping pong, reading by the pool, dinners of local cuisine, and ending each night lounging on the couch watching episodes of Sex and the City. It was a perfect vacation.

Thanks to Seth, Devin, Paul, Joey, Carlos, Joe C, and especially Joe F for making it happen.

The Graduation that Wasn't

So, after two long and grueling years of working full time AND being a full time student (18 credits this last semester) this week marks the week I would have graduated (if I had chosen to walk). I decided not to bother with the ceremony because;
1) I had just returned from The Dominican Republic the day before.
2) No family was able to come out for the ceremony.
3) I still have 2 summer courses, so it's not like I am really done.

Following the last day of classes, I went out with a couple of my nearest and dearest school friends. How is it that in a Social work program that is 80% female, my closest friends were male???

I need to take a class in how to make and keep girlfriends!

Another year has passed. It's been a good one- a busy one, but a good one.
Highlights of my 33rd year include:
* Traveling to 9 countries (Israel, France, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Russia, Estonia, Poland, and Germany).
* Vacations to Las Vegas, Miami, and Rexburg.
* Girls weekend in SLC with Aunt Nancy, Mom, Kym, and Avery (complete with spas, room service, and seeing friends in Legally Blonde).
* Finishing my field placement and second year of my MSW program (only two classes left to graduation!!!).
* No computer crashes or lost/stolen/destroyed electronics (you know I have horrible luck with tech devices).
* Two trips to Disney World with the gang (including performing in the American Idol experience).
* Countless dinners, parties, celebrations, movie nights, and other memory making nights out with people I love.

Surely there are other highlights I cannot recall at this time. All that matters is I survived another year and spend it surrounded by people I love who love me. Who could ask for anything more???

For my bday this year, I kept it simple- just food, friends, and music at my house.

DIVA DANCE!

One thing you should know... my girlfriends are FABULOUS! Ashleigh and Heather have been taking classes from DIVA DANCE- a dance company for fabulous women. In NYC, most dance classes are geared towards the professional dancer (Broadway, ballet, ballroom, etc...). Diva Dance is for the non-professional dancers who just like to move and shake their groove thang.

We had a girls night out and went to their showcase in the East Village.
They were FABULOUS (naturally). Beyonce, Gaga, etc... These girls were WORKING IT OUT!

After their show, I headed uptown to see the show of a couple of other 'girlfriends' shaking their stuff.
Equally fabulous... but in a different way.

A few Saturdays ago- two amazing things happened.
1) I got to spend an entire day with my friend Chad Harlow- an extraordinary person who is even busier than I am (hence, we never see each other), and
2) I GOT BANGS!!!

Chad is a fabulous stylist and cut, colored, and 'banged' me.

I have not had bangs since 6th grade. Some of you may remember the famous bang incident of 1988 when in an attempt to grow my hair out all one length, I had the genius idea to just cut my bangs at the root and be done with them. As soon as I made the cut I realized the error of my ways. That night began both my inclination towards headbands, and my crisis of faith (as I fell asleep, I prayed so intently to wake up and have my hair back. Didn't happen.).

While the bangs and layers took some getting used to. I have to say, this qualifies as one of the top haircuts of my life! Thanks Chad!

When signs of spring start appearing and the weather starts warming up... it means two things... nights on Joe's rooftop deck, and Wade's Bday! Naturally, a combination of the two makes an ideal night.
Before the main event at Rosa Mexicana (and if you haven't had the guacamole or frozen pomegranate margarita- schedule a night out ASAP), we met on Joe's roof for some pre-dinner cupcakes and cocktails (I admit, I was more excited about the cupcakes).
Happy birthday to one of the most loved, well traveled, delightful, talented, and loving men I have ever met. I love you Waders.

A Weekend in the Country- Take 2

Last fall Carlos, Joe, and I spent the weekend with our friends Jason and Yoav at their country house about 2 hours outside the city. It is a gorgeous home (impeccably decorated thanks largely to Jason) and is surrounded by woods, streams, lakes, and spectacular country.
In addition to the five adults, we had two babies with us as well. Jason and Yoav have a one year old daughter, Emma, and Carlos and Joe are now foster daddies to the most delicious little man you can imagine. (Side note: We know this is a temporary placement, but the gang (especially the daddies) have fallen in love with baby J and it is going to be rough to say goodbye).
It was a weekend of relaxing, playing with babies, singing around the piano, eating Jason's gourmet cooking, soaking in the hot tub, going on nature walks, and reading the entire latest Chelsea Handler book (love her!).

Last minute vacation to Utah and Idaho

Thanks to my amazing Aunt Nancy (and her Delta miles), I was able to spend a week with my family in Utah and Idaho.
Highlights include:
1) Staying at the Grand America hotel and getting massages and room service.
2) Going to Legally Blonde with my mom, sister, niece, and Aunt.
3) Seeing my amazing friends Jeff, Josh, and Ven in LB in SLC.
4) Spending quality time with Aunt Nancy.
5) Spending time with Grandma Henderson and Grandma Flint.
6) Chillazing in Rexburg with no responsibilities other than go to Millhollow with the coolest kids ever.
7) Annual free-for-all spending spree in the College Bookstore with dad (thanks Dad!).
8) Mom cooking Sunday dinner with funeral potatoes (the best ever)!

A Night Out with my Girlfriends

A few weeks ago the gang and I went to a fundraiser for the Gaynor School (private school on the UWS). In addition to having a great night out with friends, other highlights include live music provided by Bernadette Peters, amazing food, and, best of all... a live auction.
This was no ordinary auction. At one point, The Edge (from U2) got up and played the guitar, autographed it, and auctioned it off. You should know that I got caught up in the excitement and bid $14,000. Thank goodness someone outbid me- but I did get to experience the thrill of making a bid like that!
As a table, we were pretty stoked about the final item- an all inclusive private villa on the beach in the Dominican Republic (in house chef included). Thanks to Carlos's bidding skills and enthusiasm... WE GOT IT!!!
I will be vacationing with my friends over Memorial Day weekend at our private beach side villa being catered to by a gourmet chef. BRING IT!

Growing Pains

These past weekend was full of unexpectedness (is that a word)?
While I clearly have no concerns about my own privacy (hence, the public blog), I do try to shy away from the life details of those around me. That being said, when big life changes come to those you are closest to, one cannot help but be affected.
(was that vague enough).
It is painful to see people you love aching.

I recently read a line in a book that so adequately captured that gut wrenching emotion of helplessness when someone you love is suffering and there is nothing you can do about it.

"You want to know what helplessness is? It's listening to your inmate wife tell you about the psychopath who is terrorizing her and not being able to do a damn thing about it."

This is clearly a very detailed and unfamiliar scenario, yet I can't explain why this resonated so strongly. Perhaps it's because this past year was pretty smooth sailing for me, but more than ever it seems that people I care about were suffering through some of the most painful life events (Death of parents, children, spouses. Unemployment. Broken relationships, broken hearts, health problems, etc...).

Wouldn't it be lovely if we could actually carry some of the pain of others when they need it (and likewise, pass some of our own off when it's too much)?

This past week I went to see the Broadway musical HAIR. The show was great fun- I mean, how often do you get a chance to wear flowers in your hair and get humped in your seat by an old friend dressed as a long haired hippie? (not often enough I say)!

Apparently the theme of the night was "friends in long haired wigs singing their faces off" because following HAIR, my lovely friend Heather and I headed over to Bartini to see another friend (Daniel Kelly, i.e. Paige Turner) do a little show.

My dear friend, the incredible Joey K turned 30 last week. Naturally, this warranted a destination celebration somewhere balmy and sunny. Plans were put in place months ago that we would travel to Miami for the the occasion.
The joy of getting out of the miserable east coast winter was compounded by the fact that we left the day of a huge blizzard. We were one of the only flights to get out of NYC that day. The birthday Gods were smiling on us. While NYC lay blanketed under a foot of snow, we were sipping cocktails by the pool and dancing in the ocean.

You know what I have never really gotten into? Anti Valentines Day parties.
It's been a long (long) time since I have had a relationship/lover/admirer/crush on February 14th... in fact... I don't think I ever have.
That being said, this is a holiday I can 100% support and get behind. Most of my Vday memories involve dinner parties with people I love or spending the evening with besties. This year I went to Miami with five of my nearest and dearest.
Not a bad way to spend a holiday all about sharing love with the ones you care about most.
BTW... perhaps the reason I am such a fan of Valentines Day is that I have NONE of the pressure/obligation/responsibility that comes with it.

ALSO... DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT go see the star studded movie 'Valentines Day.' You will never get that $11 or two hours of your life back. At least I got to enjoy it with Paul and Joey- two people who also appreciate ridiculous cinema.

Cougar Reunion

So, December 30th, the night before I flew back to NYC I met my good friend John, and new friend Riley in downtown Salt Lake City for dinner before catching the red eye flight back to Manhattan. We had a wonderful dinner, got caught up on gossip and each other's lives, and enjoyed the gorgeous recent snow fall.
Let me break down the timeline of what happened next:
9:30pm: Enjoyed a lovely dinner and quite spectacular Cobb Salad at Red Rock.
12:05 am: Departed SLC feeling fine.
6:00am: Arrived at JFK airport feeling slightly woozy (not uncommon after a red eye flight and no sleep).
7:00am: Got on the E train subway heading to Manhattan.
7:25am: Felt a wave a nausea, broke out in a cold sweat, and nearly passed out on the train.
7:28am: Prayed like I have not prayed in a long time that I would not hurl on the rush hour packed express train.
7:31am: Arrived at a random stop in Queens. Rushed out of the train with my luggage and puked into a garbage can on the platform (HUMILIATING!!!).
7:40am: Got on the next train thinking (foolishly) the worst was over.
7:50am: Arrived in midtown. Repeat of 7:31am mishap.
7:55am: Got in a cab to go the rest of the way home. Continued my prayer to make it home without incident.
8:10am: Arrived at my apartment building. Could not make it to the 5th floor. Illegally broke into the apartment below mine and puked in their toilet (no one is living there and the door was miraculously unlocked).
8:20am- next 32 hours): Wore a path between my bed and the bathroom with painful intervals about every 20 minutes. At one point made a bed on the bathroom floor out of towels because I simply did not have the strength to return to my room.
December 31st, 11:59pm: Listened to my neighbors count down to the new year with my cheek pressed against the toilet seat (it felt so cool). Tried to be optimistic by looking at this as a full body cleanse to start 2010 off right.
January 2nd, 10:00am: After sleeping about 20 hours after the final 'cleansing' I woke up famished and craving scrambled eggs.

Oh There's No Place Like Home for the Holidays

Christmas comes at a horrible time of year. Between flu season, year end work reports and other requirements, lousy weather that makes travel risky and chaotic, etc... it's a wonder there is time/energy left to celebrate the season at all. However, even with all the distractions/hassles/obligations, I look forward to this time of year more than any other season.
Last week I returned from seven days home with my family. Most of the vacation was spent in the car (after a 5 hour drive from the airport to my house, we turned right around and drove to southern CA after 'Santa' brought the family Disneyland tickets).

I had a wonderful, relaxing, and very merry Christmas. I hope you all had an equally marvelous holiday.

Christmas Traditions... Ten Years and Still Going Strong

Every December I get together with my best friends and we have a night of "New York Family Christmas." I am very lucky to have such a close group of friends- and we certainly get to see a lot of each other during the year. However, even after ten years of NY Family Christmas, I still eagerly look forward to this special night each season.
This year we celebrated in Carlos and Joe's new house. All the seasonal necessities were provided... a lighted tree, Maureen McGovern singing Christmas standards, and peppermint cosmos. I am so So SOOO grateful that I get to spend another year with this group of extraordinary besties.

Gary Wright did it again.
Following an amazing meal at a new favorite restaurant 'Bricco,' Gary took me, Paul, and Wade to see one of my personal favorites- the incomparable, ultimate fabulous woman- Sandi Patty!!!
Not only did we sit on the FRONT ROW at Carnegie Hall for Sister Patty's Christmas concert with the New York Pops, but it turns out, Gary is dear friends with Sandi and following the show we went backstage and met her.
She was gracious, personable, open, and charming.
Seriously, the ultimate fabulous woman. No wonder drag queens across the globe strive to emulate her style, energy, sound, and appearance.

Following the concert, we braved the blustery blizzard and headed the few blocks to Therapy to visit Patrick at work.
Great friends. Marvelous music. Horrible weather. Totally worth it!

It's Beginning to Look a lot like Christmas

While running around doing some Christmas shopping this week, I was suddenly filled with the Christmas spirit thanks to the energy of midtown Manhattan at Christmas time. I enjoyed the window displays at Lord and Taylors, walked through Bryant Park and the ice-skating rink, and saw all the wreaths, lights, and music coming from nearly every building. I love Christmas in New York!!!

I have an absolutely lovely and amazing friend who I don't get to see nearly enough.
Gary Wright is kind of like this magical mythical creature. There is no predicting when he will show up, but when he does... I know I am going to be surrounded by the best energy, positivity, and complete love.
In addition to being one of the most complimentary and marvelous men I have ever known, I have also learned that with Gary, comes new restaurant recommendations and fabulous eateries (usually ones that I have never before visited).
Gary came to town last week and we went to Fig and Olive in the Meat packing district. It was wonderful.

Gratitude #4: I've got a roof over my head.

I realize that Thanksgiving is over... but I don't think that means the gratitude list should end. Right???
This is actually a mixed gratitude review. Let me start by saying I am very grateful that I get to live/work/play in New York City. Even more grateful that I have an amazing, spacious, comfortable, reasonably priced, great location, clean, and cozy apartment.
HOWEVER, in order to have this safe, comfortable, large, etc... apartment, I also have roommates.
Fortunately, I have been lucky enough to have lived with some of the most outstanding people I have ever met. Very little drama. That being said, it does suck when it comes time for a roommate to move out (new job, marriage, tired of NYC, etc...).
Once again, I find myself looking for a new roommate. UUUGGgggghhhhhhhhh!!!
Seriously, apartments like this are in high demand (it's just a pain weeding through the weirdos in order to find the next domestic partner).

In continuing with the thanksgiving theme, my #3 gratitude would have to be health.
Health is one of those things that you don't really appreciate until it's compromised. Overall, I have been very lucky. Sure, I should take better care of myself by going to the gym and eating healthier, and anyone who knows me knows I am incredibly clumsy. However, for better or worse- I have a body that works. Not always perfectly- but I can walk without a wheelchair, I can live in a 5th floor walk-up building, I can think logically and use reason, I can feel emotion and (usually) respond appropriately in social settings. My heart beats on its own. I can see, hear, speak, smell, and feel. I am not in pain. I am blessed (now I really feel like I need to reward my body by hitting the running track).

After 20 years of never having stitches, a broken bone, or spending the night in a hospital- I had unexpected major surgery (note that I have needles in my neck and hand, a tube in my nose, monitors on my chest, and am hooked up to every machine on that wall). 1998 was a rough year.

After my last blog (four days ago), my plan was to write a daily 'gratitude' post. I already knew that my #2 post (after family) would be expressing my deep gratitude for my friends. The fact that I have been unable to update this daily blog in days because I have been out with friends for the past four nights is a testament to how lucky I am. Seriously. I have the most amazing friends!
As I was going through pictures to add to this post, I was overwhelmed with the number of truly remarkable people I have met in my life- people that I can call my friends. From childhood, to high school, to college, through my 20's, and now as as adult, I have been blessed.
I started narrowing the pics by just saying "Oh, I HAVE to include one from this time period" or "I HAVE to have one of this person." Even after about 6 rounds of cuts, I was still at 44 pictures- all of which were "must includes."
Fear not, I did force myself to cut the list.
*** Please note: I only have access to pictures (with few exceptions) since the digital age. Also dear friends, please know that if you do not see your gorgeous face below, trust that I most surely thought of you as I reminisced about the past three (I MEAN TWO AND A HALF) decades of my life.
I am tempted to start naming names, but if I started- I wouldn't be able to stop. I love you my friends. Thank you for being in my life and making me a better person.

I just returned from my first of FOUR Thanksgiving meals planned this week. Along with keeping up the tradition of eating too much, I also enjoyed the annual (and always expected) "go around the table and say what you are grateful for" activity.
Today was especially meaningful as it was the Thanksgiving dinner family event with clients from work.
I work as a Child Life Specialist (I didn't choose the title) at a social service agency in Harlem. My work is primarily working with families who may have any combination of: compromised health, mental illness, history of homelessness, living in poverty, etc... Needless to say, it is often easy for these good folks to focus on what really sucks in their lives. Hearing everyone so easily express their gratitude made me realize that no matter what our situation, there is always something that keeps us going.
In keeping with the theme of Gratitude, I am going to dedicate the next week to daily musings on what I am grateful for... starting with the first and most important.
MY FAMILY.

There is no possible way I could list everything my family has done for me and taught me over the last three decades. Instead, I will focus on a few highlights.

Dad, thank you for teaching me how to work. You taught me (both by example and force) the value of being responsible. Thank you for making me do chores every Saturday before I could play. Thank you for helping me put fliers up around town to promote my babysitting business when I was ten. Thank you for driving me to Idaho Falls (until I could drive myself) to wait tables. Thank you for helping me apply to college. Thank you for always encouraging and supporting me even when I chose to be a Sociology major. Most of all, now that you have taught me those lessons, thank you for letting me sleep in, relax, and do nothing when I come home to visit. I love you.

Mom,
Thank you for being patient with my many moods, quirks, unreasonable behavior, and occassional rudeness. I know that I can be impatient and intolerant at times. We both know I don't get it from you. :) Thank you for ignoring my moods and irrationality. Thank you for being so free to point out the good traits and quietly ignoring the bad ones. Thank you for being so free with praise and love and for ALWAYS being there. I have never doubted that you will support me.
BTW, you are a pretty amazing grandma as well!

Remember how whenever we would fight (which was often) and mom would say 'One day your sister is going to be your best friend." I don't know about you, but I NEVER believed her. Turns out, she was right. I am SO grateful that I have you as a sister. You are truly extraordinary. Your such a hard and SMART worker. I am so proud of how committed to are to your work. You are also and amazing mother and I am so grateful that you let me be a part of your kids lives. You make me laugh and I love talking to you - especially about our parents.

I love it when we are home at the same time because I get to be even more lazy because you always offer to cook, run errands, and just make us all laugh. Return to Nobu: This Time to Celebrate the Return of WADE!!!

This week it was beyond a joy to gather in celebration of the return of Wade from his 6 month stint on a cruise ship.

A Weekend in the Country

I have decided that I feel the same way about country/vacation houses as I do about babies... I don't need one of my own, I just need friends that have them. Last weekend Carlos, Joe, and I had the delightful privilege of spending the weekend at the country house of our friends Jason and Yoav (along with their beautiful one year old daughter Emma). The weather could not have been more perfect.

Some of the highlights include:

A stunning hike through the fall leaves with Jason, Carlos, and new friends Michael and Stephen. My darling friend Ashleigh had a theme birthday party this year- Stilettos in the Kitchen. It was all about personal empowerment, future planning, and owning your own success. Now, I don't know if "Stilettos in the Kitchen" is the right catch phrase for my future success, but I appreciate that it is feminine and powerful.
The night included describing our ideal futures and creating vision boards.
Oh Ashleigh, I wish I could bottle your energy and enthusiasm! I love you girl!

Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge- One of my fav NY things

After our Brooklyn adventure seeing The Tiger Lillies (now I know why I seldom leave Manhattan),Seth and I decided to enjoy the crisp fall air by walking home across the Brooklyn Bridge. The night was perfect- a little chilly, but mostly refreshing.

I decided I wanted to climb up on the bridge scaffolding- hoping it would provide an even better background of the city. Seth was screaming at me to get down, and in retrospect (given my tendencies towards falling, slipping, and tripping), it may not have been such a great idea.

We warmed up with one of my favorites... hot apple cider.

Even the downtown subway stations are more interesting/creepy than the uptown trains I am used to.

Tiger Lillies- The Freakshow arrives in Brooklyn

The night after seeing MIKA (still giddy about how amazing that concert was), Seth and I decided to take advantage of being New Yorkers and headed out to Brooklyn for some avant-garde theater.
I was not familiar with the group Tiger Lillies prior to seeing the show. I knew they were clownish accordion playing theater type musicians. Sounded great to me!
I was not prepared for the show I was about to see! Known as the worlds most foremost oompah death band, I should have had my reservations. We left at intermission, but here are some of the uplifting lyrics to give you a taste of the show (don't forget, all songs were accompanied by an accordion).

Not too long ago I went to what is almost certainly the most amazing, captivating, enjoyable, unbelievable, and spectacular concert of my life. MIKA (the Beirut born, Paris raised, British pop sensation) performed at an old church/converted concert space in Washington Heights.
I have loved MIKA for a couple of years now, but I was unprepared for the caliber of live performance charisma and talent he delivers. Seriously, the man did not leave the stage, performed every song on both his albums, and danced and sang HIS FACE OFF!
If you ever get a chance to see/hear MIKA live, TAKE IT!

First of all, let me say that I love digital cameras. Seriously, that instant gratification after taking a shot, the ability to shoot the same picture over and over and then pick your favorite, the 'delete' option if you look too cross-eyed/fat/pathetic, etc...
HOWEVER, I do miss that joy that comes from the anticipation of waiting to get pictures back. Remember dropping off film and then not being able to wait the one hour to rip open the envelope and see what you captured months earlier?
Ladies and gentlemen, I have found a product that combines the technology of digital, with the joy of holding your pictures in your hand and showing them off.

The American Idol Experience

Okay, if you have been to Disney World since February 2009, you may have noticed the new American Idol attraction at Hollywood Studios (formerly MGM park). Each day 'American Idol' style auditions are held and anyone can audition with a 30 second acapella piece. During several rounds of auditions, producers narrow the participants down to a final few who go on to perform a live show that evening in a new 1000 seat theater. So there we are in the park and the four of us (Joe, Carlos, Annette, and I) decide that we really cannot pass this up. As Carlos and Joe both have professional theater experience, it was decided they would audition and Annette and I would accompany them backstage (each auditioner can bring one 'superfan' with them). However, once we got inside, Carlos bailed and physically FORCED me to audition. I (angrily and hesitantly) agreed, thinking I would sing my 30 seconds and then we would move on to the Animal Kingdom. Turns out, both Joe and I were then kept through several rounds of auditions and were chosen to return later that afternoon for hair, make-up, a vocal coaching, technical run-through, and full performance "American Idol Style" in front of a full audience. Fun, thrilling, terrifying... I cannot describe it. Sure, I was scared to death, forgot to walk to the front of the stage, and cracked on the money note- but that's not the point. It turned out to be one of the funnest ways to spend the day!!! This story will go down as one of the highlight friend events - right up there with the wedding in Costa Rica, Christmas slumber parties, and the night bus to Italy.

Here is a little video recap that was played before the audience voting (I'm SO glad that they showed the clip of my cracking on the big note). :) Sadly, neither Joe or I won, but who cares?!?!? What a blast!!!
